Prince George’s billionaire godfather has £42k watch collection nabbed

The multi-billionaire godfather of Prince George had watches worth more than £40,000 nicked by a workman who was redecorating one of his properties.

The Duke of Westminster – whose net worth is estimated at nearly £9.5billion and who is believed to own more land then the King – had a £30,000 Cartier London Tank JC swiped by the crook, as well as a couple of other time pieces.

The theft at the duke’s massive estate in Cheshire happened last August, but details of the crime have only just been revealed following a court appearance by the thief.

Matthew Turner, 24, of Great Sutton, near Ellesmere Port, pleaded guilty last Friday at Chester Magistrates’ Court to burglary between August 7 and August 31, 2022. He also admitted nicking £60 from a tyre shop. He’ll be sentenced later at Chester Crown Court.

Nathan Elliot, 30, of Whitby, Ellesmere Port was charged with handling the stolen Cartier. He pleaded not guilty and will face trial.

The duke, 32, discovered the watches were missing several weeks later when he was looking for the Cartier at Eaton Hall. Turner also got away with a Panerai Luminor Marina and a Breitling, each worth about £6,000.

It’s thought the duke had employed the workmen to redecorate a number of rooms at the mansion but not his bedroom, which is where Turner snuck in to.

Prosecutor Scott Woodward said the case was serious enough to be dealt with at crown court. He said: “The Crown says this is not suitable to be dealt with in this court. The charge is a domestic burglary. The value of goods from the burglary is £42,000, a significant amount.

“Taking that value, the starting point [for sentencing] is one year in custody. The sentencing guidelines are clearly in excess of this court so I invite you to send it to the crown court.”

Turner was bailed pending the sentencing, which is thought will happen after Elliott’s trial.

The duke – Hugh Grosvenor – is pals with Prince William and Prince Harry. His title was originally Earl Grosvenor, but he became the seventh duke when his dad died in 2016. He’s set to get hitched to Olivia Grace Henson next June at Chester Cathedral.
